Privacy Awareness Week (Monday 4 May – Friday 8 May 2020)

07 May 2020 by

In the current social climate with students attending lessons online, it is even more imperative that all online experiences indicate an awareness of online etiquette and adherence to safe guards in order that personal information is protected.

Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is an annual event that highlights the importance of such protection and this week, Monday 4 May to Friday 10 May, we celebrate this year’s Week with the theme ‘Privacy – protect yours and respect others’.

Privacy has become a top priority for online users, as personal information is a critical input to the economy and government agencies. There exists a heightened awareness of privacy issues as organisations and agencies face increasingly complex data protection challenges. These challenges include: confidentiality ensuring information is only accessed by the correct people, and integrity, which ensures the information is complete, accurate and up to date. The challenge is to also ensure the timely and reliable availability of information to the appropriate people.

To assist with awareness of personal privacy the following safe guards can be considered:

  • Be aware of what you share
  • Create strong passwords to be secure
  • Treat any unexpected message with caution
  • Keep to trusted websites
  • Keep financial details from prying eyes
  • Stay secure while on the move
  • Back up and update for safety
  • Keep everyone safe by reporting scams.
