Organic waste recycling

23 May 2017 by

Thank you to Wyndham City Council for their generous donation of 11 organic waste caddies to support our ‘closing the loop’ in our waste disposal at the College.

To begin with the caddies are being rolled out in stages to the canteen, food tech rooms and the staff room. Most of the food scraps go to our new resident chickens, with the remainder and paper towel, etc. going into the TumbleWeed compost bin EcoMacK constructed last year. The eggs from the chickens are used in food preparation on-site, primarily at the canteen to begin with. More compost bins and chickens will be coming throughout this year and the compost and fertiliser are going to be used in our upcoming edible garden space at the old cricket nets.

Organic waste caddies are also available through Council to local residents who would like to divert food waste from landfill, the information is as follows:

Do you have a green bin? Everything organic that goes into a green bin is made into compost and here in Wyndham you can add your fruit and vegetable scraps. To make it easy to separate your fruit and vegetable scraps get a free kitchen caddy from Wyndham Civic Centre or Wyndham Vale, Point Cook or Tarneit Community Learning Centre’s.

If you don’t have a green bin but want to separate your food waste from landfill join Compost Revolution. Wyndham City offers residents of Wyndham a 50% discount on compost bins and worm farms. For more details visit: http://compostrevolution.com.au/wyndham/
