Holiday Reading
As Term 2 holidays approach, Library staff are reminding all students of the importance of taking a respite from their studies and indulging in reading.
Why read?
There are many benefits to reading, including stress reduction, vocabulary expansion and the improvement of focus and concentration. Reading also nurtures the imagination, enhances creativity and strengthens analytical skills.
Of course, reading is also a fun, leisurely activity which promotes daily mindfulness.
Looking for inspiration?
Students are encouraged to visit the Library before and during the holidays to browse the shelves for some leisurely reading. If students are looking for inspiration, the following organisations specialize in selecting books aimed at an adolescent audience.
- The Inky Awards lists award winning books selected by young adults
- The Children’s Book Council of Australia have just announced their shortlist of noteworthy books
- The Young Adult Library Services Association provides comprehensive guidance on books for 12-18 year olds
- The Premier’s Reading Challenge has lists of books to engage all year levels
There are also numerous ‘must-read’ lists on the open web, which we encourage students and parents to look through.
Happy Holiday Reading!
