EcoMacK student environmental group successfully restarted in 2012
MacKillop College successfully restarted its student environmental group, EcoMacK, in 2012, after a 4 year hiatus. More than 30 students joined over the course of the year and advertised events at school assemblies, in the daily information sheet and in the College newsletter.
EcoMacK successfully ran a Sustainability Week for the first time in July 2012, which included a foyer display, tree planting day, Nude Food Day, and also kicked off a mobile phone drive, supporting the We’re Calling On You program run by Zoos Victoria. George the Gorilla made an appearance at the assembly advertising Sustainability Week, much to the delight of staff and students. Over 300 trees were planted by students on National School Trees Day, with EcoMacK members conducting tree-planting demonstrations and helping fellow students.
Another Nude Food Day was celebrated on National Nude Food Day in November, this time participation was significantly increased and awareness raised by running a raffle at each year level and one for staff, which rewarded nude foodies on the day with an entry into a prize draw. Prize packs included fruit, drink bottles, Smash lunch/salad boxes and Smash snack tubes.
