School Water Efficiency Program
MacKillop College joined the School Water Efficiency Program in June, a government-sponsored initiative.
A data logger has been attached to the main campus water meter that tracks water usage, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Leaks can then be detected by monitoring the water usage overnight and on weekends. Once leaks have been minimised, ways to reduce water use during peaks times will be investigated, including procedural changes and awareness campaigns.
Throughout this process, leaks have been significantly reduced from 670L to 150L per hour. Further investigation is taking place to determine where else water may be leaking from. To date the reduction of leaks has been a considerable financial and environmental saving to the College, conserving an estimated 180,000 L of drinking water a fortnight.
