MacKillop joins in on Remembrance Day celebrations
Monday the 11th of November was the 95th anniversary of the Armistice which brought round an end to World War One. To commemorate this event the two Year 9 Main Campus History classes made their way into the Shrine of Remembrance to participate in the memorial and activities which followed. The students were joined by many other schools and members of the Victorian community, as well as the Governor of Victoria His Excellency the Honourable Alex Chernov, The Premier of Victoria Dr Dennis Napthine, and the Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbot. After the formalities and the minute of silence students were able to participate in a range of activities from handling WWI relics to planting a poppy in the memorial garden, as well as having a moment to talk to and have a photo with Victoria Cross recipient Mark Donaldson. The day ended with a shared lunch in the Botanical Gardens, students took home with them a deeper understanding of what it meant to fight and die for the freedoms of their homeland.
