Debating is important as it allows those who are involved to develop their critical thinking and communication skills, as well as their ability to work in teams. Here at MacKillop, we value these skills and as such, during term two, the College held a debating competition for our senior school students. Four teams registered for the competition which comprised of Year 11 and 12 students. Both students and teachers attended the debates out of interest, as they took place during lunch times in the MCA.
The two debates were based on the following topics:
- Welfare payments are a privilege, not a right.
- Australian parents have the right to choose whether or not they immunise their children.
All students involved demonstrated a high level of courage and commitment to their topic. The debates were passionate, entertaining and well researched. Well done to all those involved!
